Spring cleaning by Labour
Sir, — The leading article on the Labour Party’s spring cleaning and swing to the Left assumed that all would be tight and ship-shape on the next nation-wide polling day, with animosities forgotten and with no seat losses in either Dunedin or Christchurch. Others
think differently. There is no evidence to support the view that the follies of the Labour Party will not figure large when D-day dawns. My friend at the Woburn workshops tells me that the treatment of the so-called “rebels” has dismayed the faithful in that area. Letters from other parts of New Zealand tell the same story. Your editorial was misleading in that it minimised the wide ideological differences in the party and was far from reflecting the true position. The gang of three — Anderton, Palmer and Hercus — speak a different language to Lange, MacDonell, and Batchelor, and no amount of mellifluous words from “The Press,” or anyone else, can disguise this fact. — Yours, etc., ILLINGWORTH MACKAY. Lower Hutt. September 28, 1983.
