Craft shop a winner
By DIANA DEKKER, in London “Kiwi Fruits,” the New Zealand craft shop opened on the fringe of Covent Garden, London, six weeks ago, is proving a winner. “I couldn’t be too optimistic until now because this is London and we were jusl getting going,” said Mrs Lynne Milne, the former Christchurch woman who opened the shop. “People can’t believe the quality and the variety of the work. “Even New Zealanders who haven’t been back to New Zealand for five years are amazed at the standard of the work. I hope that it’s helping to put New Zealand crafts people on the map.” Mrs Milne has found pottery the most popular item she stocks. Customers have also been impressed by the quality paua jewellery. New Zealand food — soups, pates and honey — are selling well along with afghans, hokey-pokey biscuits and “Minties.” Mrs Milne has had an application for a licence to stock New Zealand wine rejected, but intends to perservere with it. “Because the food is so popular I know the wine will be,” she said. “There’s nowhere in London that you can go to view the entire selection of New Zealand wine available.”
