Mining-women move welcomed

Parliamentary reporter Legislation permitting women to work underground in coalmines has been welcomed by two national women’s organisations.

The Coalmines Amendment Bill, which in clause 4 removes restrictions on this, is being considered by Parliament’s Commerce and Energy Select Committee.

The National Council of Women supported clause 4 as part of its policy seeking “absolute equality to be the law of the land for both

men and women.” When New Zealand ceased to be bound by International Labour Organisation convention 45 (protecting women from exploitation) immediate steps should be taken to remove restrictions on the employment of women underground, the national council said.

This sentiment was echoed by the National Advisory Council on the Employment of Women, a Government body set up to advise on women’s employment.
