FM broadcasts
Sir,—Ken Coates’s article on FM warrants (September 14) makes a point that Christchurch is lagging in the matter of a high quality, fre-quency-modulated (FM), stereo broadcasting service. Here in Sydney I can listen to four community stations on FM — nine have been licensed altogether. There is classical music from the ABC or 2MBSFM (a volunteer station), there are two commercial FM stations, one educational station (2SER-FM) and a religious station (2CBA-FM). Note that in all these, one is State, two are commercial and the rest are do-it-yourself. Well, as we said in Wellington when we launched the Newlands Broadcasting Society for FM community broadcasting in 1967, it could be a tiling where you get up and do it yourself. I regret I have had to leave my homeland to go to a place where initiative and enterprise are more possible.— Yours, etc., BEN FURBY. North Sydney, September 22, 1983.
