‘Naked ambition’

PA Wellington The president of the Labour Party, Mr J. P. Anderton, was demonstrating “naked ambition” by challenging the retiring Sydenham member of Parliament, Mr John Kirk, to resign and create a byelection, said the leader of Social Credit, Mr Beetham, yesterday.

He said Mr Anderton wanted to “dislodge” the party’s leader, Mr Lange, as soon as possible.

“Mr Anderton does not want Labour to win under Mr Lange, and creating a situation where two and possibly three Labour members feel they have no option but to become Inde-

pendents in Parliament means that Labour will no longer be able to exercise any real pressure on the Government,” he said. “This will give the Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) an easier ride and greater flexibility in manipulating the political situation to his advantage for the next election.” Even when Mr Kirk and the Dunedin Central member of Parliament, Mr B. P. MacDonell, were part of the caucus and National had a majority of one in Parliament, the Labour Party time and again showed itself reluctant to put real pressure on the Prime Minister, Mr Beetham said.
