Soccer ‘player of year’

The Cashmere striker, Mark Smith, was last night named the Canterbury Football Association’s player of the year. Smith, aged 23, was the equal top goal scorer in the Hertz league this year, with 13 goals, the same number he netted last season, and but for injury his tally could well have been higher. In May, he represented Canterbury for the first time in a match against Otago. Peter Hawker, aged 19,

won the trophy for the best goal-keeper. Hawker has played in all 18 Hertz league matches this season, and last Saturday took the field in the Rothmans league play-off against Stop Out with a broken finger. The contributions of two referees, Arthur Edwards and Derek Lowe, were recognised when they were presented with long service medals. Both men have given 15 years service, and Edwards has been appointed to the F.I.F.A. referees’ panel.
