Subtle name difference
The man who chose Don Hayes as “Player of the Day" in the Ranfurly Shield rugby match last Saturday was not Ewan Hern, as mentioned in “The Press” yesterday, but Cran Hearn, who preceded his namesake in the Canterbury pack by 15 years and who later had the pleasure of coaching him in the Old Boys seniors.
The confusion arose through an announcement that the guest selector was “a famous player of the 19505.” Cran Hearn played for the province in 1938-39. Ewan Hern said yesterday he would have been delighted to choose the man of the match; his choice in the Auckland game would have been Victor Simpson.
