Bi-lingual education move

PA Auckland Bi-lingual education will be introduced at Otara’s Clydemore Primary School “as soon as possible,” said the school committee chairman, Mr Pohiri Hamiora. Mr Hamiora said that the committee shared the concern of parents, whose children attended kohanga reo (Maori language preschools), that their children would not be able to continue to learn Maori once they had started primary school.

The parents of five children at Te Kohanga Reo Ki Otara had refused to enrol their children until an assurance was given that a bilingual unit would be set up. “The committee is behind kohanga reo and its objectives and is very sympathetic to it,” said Mr Hamiora. A development committee was set up to look at the attitudes of the Auckland Education Board, the staff, and community towards the introduction of bi-lingual education at the school.
