ANDRES GOMEZ, of Eqaador, who beat New Zealand’s Chris Lewis in the quarter-finals of a tennis tournament in Dallas recently, continued on to win the event and improve his placing in the grand prix standings from fifteenth to ninth. The top 10, with the number of tournaments played in parentheses, are: Ivan Lendl (Czechoslovakia), 2074 points (11); Jimmy Connors (United States), 2060 (12); Mats Wilander (Sweden), 1901 (14); Yannick Noah (France), 1682 (10); Jimmy Arias (United States), 1680 (15); John McEnroe (United States), 1660 (8); Jose Higueras (Spain), 1308 (13); Jose-Luis Clerc (Argentina), 1125 (12); Gomez, 888 (15); Gene Mayer (United States), 834 (9).
ENTRIES ARE still rolling in for the first International Masters swimming championships to be held at Queen Elizabeth II Park next Easter. Up to a week ago 1315 people from 17 countries had entered, including a group from Saudi Arabia. There is one former Olympic champion among the entries — Jim Montgomery of the United States who won the gold medal in the 100 m freestyle at the 1976 Olympics in a world record time. Dave Gerrard and Jaynie Parkhouse, two New Zealand Commonwealth Games champions of the past, and Hilton Brown a Commonwealth Games relay medallist at the 1966 Kingston Commonwealth Games, are other entries.
