More speed tickets issued
PA Wellington Speeding motorists were hit hard by Ministry of Transport traffic officers last year. The Ministry’s annual report, tabled in Parliament yesterday, shows that 100,140 drivers were given tickets for exceeding the 50 km/h limit — up from
79,585 the year before, and almost 2Vz times the 1980 total.
There were 52,679 open road speedsters caught — about 12,000 more than in 1981, and double the 1980 haul. Some 2893 motorists were fined for exceeding the 70 km/h limit. In 1981 the figure was 1888, and in 1980, 1423.
