20,000 hours of operation with little maintenance
About 400 irrigators have been sold by Briggs Irrigation, Ltd, of Ashburton, since their first model was produced five years ago.
Most of the unit? have been of the Rotd-rainer type, well-known for its simplicity and reliability. One Roto-rainer has been in operation for 20,000 hours and has required very little maintenance.
The company is releasing a new model this year suitable for small holdings and, already, 12 have been sold. The unit is available as a fixed boom or rotary model, and can wet an area 50m wide.
Depending on the quantity of water required, it will be suitable for areas from four to 30 hectares.
It has a boom length of 30m and the water pressure at the nozzles is between 200 and 280 k.p.a. With a 76mm hose 200 m long, the
model costs $15,000.
A staff of about 40 is employed by Briggs and another company, working under contract, to manufacture, deliver and service irrigators. Briggs Irrigation was formed five years ago as an off-shoot of Briggs Brothers, Ltd, which is involved with contracting and farming.
The company is owned by Les and Don Briggs.
The company has sold irrigators in many parts of New Zealand, from Gore to Tauranga. The machines are produced at the company’s Ashburton factory.
The company manufactures four sizes of irrigators which are with either rotating or fixed booms. The biggest model has a wetted width of 110 m.
Briggs Brothers operate six Roto-rainers on their 325-hectare farm at Bankside.
