The day in Parliament
A petition seeking the banning of commercial' trawling in waters less than 50m deep round the Coromandel Peninsula was presented by Mr G. E. Lee (Nat., Hauraki) on behalf of the Thames-Coromandel District Council when Parliament sat at 7.30 p.m. yesterday.
Mr T. J. de Cleene (Labour, Palmerston North) presented the petition of Colleen Vertongen and 259 others seeking the rejection of any bill that sought to remove unqualified preference clauses from awards. Mr P. T. E. Woollaston (Labour, Nelson) presented the petition of R. J. Linde and 224 others seeking the rejection of the State Services Conditions of Employment Bill.
Similar petitions were tiresented by Mr J. A. Banks National, Whangarei) on be--half of T. A. Brown and 425 ! others; by Mr D. F. Quigley (National, Rangiora) on be-' half of M. A. Harris and R. A. Bennett and others; and B. C. Beetham (Socred, Rangitikei) on behalf of E. J. Wilton and 230 others.
The annual reports of the. Porirua Licensing Trust and' the Tourism and Publicity Department were tabled. Members gave eight notices of motion. Ministers, answered 16 questions. The Dunedin District Drainage and Sewerage Amendment Bill was reported back from the Local : Bills Committee, without; amendment, and set down, for second reading next sitting day. ; The Forestry Rights Registration Bill was reported back from the Lands and. Agriculture Committee, with amendment, and was set down for second reading next sitting day. The report of the Local Bills Committee into the fencing of swimming pools was agreed to, an amendment to it being lost on a 37-38 division. The amendment sought to empower local authorities to pass bylaws to enforce fencing. The Fisheries Bill received its third reading, an amendment to it being lost on a 37-38 division.
The committal proceedings of the Government Life Insurance Corporation Bill were interrupted when the House rose at 10.28 p.m.
