Shipping news Coal exports up

More than 129,000 tonnes of West Coast coal is expected to be exported through Lyttelton between now and March next year. Four, or possibly five, shipments of coal would be made during this time, the Lyttelton Harbour Board’s port development committee heard yesterday. Mr David Jones, the board’s traffic manager, said coal carriers had been scheduled to call at the port in late October, two would arrive in January, and one in late February or early March. Also, a smaller shipment would possibly be made in December. One of the vessels scheduled for January might carry up to 48,000 tonnes of coal, the biggest coal shipment ever made from the port, Mr Jones said after the meeting. At present the Railways is hauling coal from the West Coast to build up the port stockpile in preparation for the shipments which all go to Japan. « * • Members of the Christchurch branch of the Company of Master Mariners recently attended a luncheon aboard the inter-island freight ferry Spirit of Free Enterprise. A representative of Pacifica Shipping, Ltd, outlined to members the operation and aims of the vessel. Members were also taken on a tour of the 1204-tonne ship. The mariners’ warden, Captain J. T. Owen, commended the head of Pacifica Shipping, Mr Brooke McKenzie, and the company for its “foresight and perseverance” in introducing its Lyttelton-Wellington service.
