Obituary Rev. H. F. Ault

A prominent Anglican church historian, the Rev. Harold Frank Ault, died in

Christchurch this week. He was 80.

Mr Ault wrote a number of books on the histories of churches in Canterbury and Nelson and also wrote articles on early Canterbury. His works included “Centennial History of All Saints’ Parish” (Nelson), “Diamond Jubilee History

of St Luke’s” (Hinds), “The Nelson Narrative,” and “Living Stream.”

He was born and educated in Christchurch and

gained a bachelor of divinity degree at the University of Melbourne. He served at Rangiora, St Albans, and St Mary Magdalen’s in Highbury, North London, before doing missionary work in Karachi from 1928 to 1933. He was

principal of the Church Missionary Society’s high school there for the last two years. Mr Ault became organising secretary of the New Zealand Anglican Board of Missions from 1938 to 1944 and served on the New Zealand Church Missionary Society executive from 1937 to 1970. He is survived by three sons and two daughters.
