Bowls series

PA Auckland Bowlers in provincial centres will have a chance to play professionally when a $17,000 satellite singles series begins next month. Ten tournaments, between October and April, will each offer $l7OO in prizemoney, it was announced yesterday.

The first event in the Countrywide-Radio N.Z. series will be held in Whangarei from October 14 to 16. All 10 tournaments will allow a maximum of 128 players. Any registered bowler may enter a tournament, but every competitor must play all qualifying rounds.

After section play 16 qualifiers will begin knockout competition. The winners in the first and second rounds get $5O a game. Semi-final winners will receive $lOO, the tournament winner $4OO and the runner-up $2OO.

The New Zealand Bowling Association invited 16 centres to hold tournaments. Only eight applied, Bay of Plenty asking for, and getting, two. One tournament will be held in Tauranga from October 29 to November 1 and another in Rotorua from January 10 to 13. The series will finish in Auckland from April 7 to 10.

Other tournaments are to be held at Dunedin, November 26-29; Invercargill, November 30-December 3; Wanganui, December 10-13; Wellington, January 14-17; Christchurch, March 4-6; and Counties, March 24-27.
