Railways discount fares popular
PA Wellington The Railways Corporation had had “an encouraging response” to its offer of big fare reductions for long-distance train travellers, said its passenger manager, Mr David Shaw.
Its offer of 25 per cent fare discounts for journeys of more than 100 km was announced in August, and these are now available,.
They follow up Air New Zealand’s introduction in July of
cheaper fares on main trunk evening flights between Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, and-Dunedin. The cheaper rail fares, known as the Off-Peak Saver, reduce travel costs between Wellington and Auckland up to $l4.
Mr Shaw said most of the immediately available discount tickets had been quickly sold. Travellers had been particularly keen to use the cheaper fares on trains such as the Northerner, Silver Fern, and Southerner.
