Soviet torture

Sir,—When in March of this year the Soviet All-Union Society of Neuropathologists and Psychiatrists announced its withdrawal from the World Psychiatric Association, it did so in these words: “The W.P.A. has unleashed an unbridled campaign of slander against us, Soviet psychiatrists. We can no longer remain members of an organisation which uses psychiatry „as means of political pressure.” Also: “Many of our former patiehts have left the Soviet Union and gone for treatment to psychiatric hospitals in the West. Our accusers, however, maintain that these people are healthy.” One would like to know who comprised the anonymous international investigating commission mentioned by John Rogers (September 19). Soviet psychiatrists have had authoritative commissions investigating their;, psychiatric practices.—Yours f -etc ' M. CREEL.’ September 19, 1983.
