Scout groups
Sir,—l recently noticed several letters in “The Press” about the formation of scout groups. My husband, who was the first King’s Scout in New Zealand, and belonged to the Woolston Group, always said that Woolston was the first scout group to be formed in New Zealand. The founder was the Rev. Orbell, who was vicar of Woolston at that time. Kaiapoi was formed a little later, but because of Mr Orbell’s omission to register the Woolston group, Kaiapoi was given the honour of being the first group. My husband unveiled the cairn at the site of the first scout camp held at Woodend in December, 1908 — he was present at the original camp.—Yours, etc., EVA RENNIE. September 19, 1983.
