Song contest semi-finalists

Eighteen semi-finalists, from an initial entry of 170 singers, have been selected for the 1983 Mobil Song Quest to be held in Wellington early next month. Auckland, with 11 singers, is strongly represented. Four singers come from Wellington and one each are from Wanganui, Kaikoura and Christchurch. Representing Christchurch is James Baines, aged 32, a baritone. At stake in the biennial contest, sponsored by Mobil Oil New Zealand, Ltd, in association with Radio New Zealand, is more than $lO,OOO in prize money, with $3OOO for the winner; second, $1000; and third, $5OO. Nine prizes of $6O will also be awarded. The best finalist under the age of 26 years will win a $5OOO scholarship, the Dame Joan Hammond Award. The scholarship will entitle its recipient to two years study under Dame Joan’s tuition at the Victorian College for the Arts, Melbourne.

Performances by the 18 semi-finalists will be featured weekly in Radio New Zealand’s “New Zealanders to the Fore” programme, from Sunday, September 25, to Sunday, October 9. From these three broadcasts, the 12 finalists will be

decided. They will be judged live, on-stage by Dame Joan Hammond in the Michael Fowler Centre, Wellington, on October 12.

The New Zealand Symphony Orchestra will accompany the singers, conducted by William Southgate. Mobil and Radio New Zealand have arranged with the New Zealand Composers’ Foundation to commission an orchestral item in honour of the new facility. This will be premiered at the concert. The semi-finalists are:— Auckland: Shelly Alexander, aged 24, contralto; Mary Aston, 26, soprano; Stewart Cameron, 23, bass; Kenneth Cornish, 39, tenor; Greta Crawley, 29, soprano; David Griffiths, 33, baritone; Ross Hinton, 31, tenor; Kathryn McGredy, 22, soprano; Phillipa Reade, 24, mezzo-soprano; Christine Treseder, 36, soprano; Rosemay Turnbull, 35, contralto.

Wanganui: Peter Stewart, 39, bass. Wellington: Ellen Barrett, 26, mezzo-soprano; Andrea Garing, 23, soprano; Donald Lister, 37, baritone; Robyn Lynch, 23, mezzo-soprano. Kaikoura: Judy Bellingham, 33, mezzo-soprano.

Christchurch: Baines, 32, baritone.
