Holiday in the sun

Dance Exponents resume their New Zealand career at the Hillsborough Tavern this week after an abortive foray into the Australian scene.

Because Jordan Luck, the lead vocalist, had Canadian citizenship, and the guitarist, Brian Jones, British citizenship, the band never played together in Australia.

According to Jordan Luck, the main objection came from the Australian Musicians’ Union, which asserted that the group was taking away jobs from its members. Brian Jones never even got to Australia, and the rest of the crew and band had a big holiday in Australia instead, Luck said. Both Luck and Jones have applied for New Zealand citizenship and if that is granted with New Zealand passports, the band will

head back to Australia after Christmas.

Although Luck considered the band were in a creative rut in New Zealand, they are still releasing a new single, “Know Your Own Heart” with “It’s Just Me and You” on the reverse, which will be out next month. After the stint at the Hillsborough, Dance Exponents will be filming video clips for the new release. Although there is talk of filming in Christchurch, Luck would like to go to the West Coast for the recording because of its distinctive setting.

Too many bands were following the English style of video clip. We did it on “Airway Spies,” but really this country’s groups should be showing things that were distinctly New Zealand, instead of copying overseas styles, Luck said.
