Cashmere teacher wins maths prize
Cashmere High School and Timaru Boys’ High School mathematics teachers have been highly placed in a national mathematics project competition. Mr Philip Tomlinson and three of his colleagues from Timaru Boy’s High School were awarded second place for a video tape presentation on the use of electronic calculators and Mr R. F. Browne of Cashmere High School was placed third for his Apple disc of noughts and crosses games for teaching co-ordinates. They had entered the mathematics project com-
petition run for the first time this year and organised by the Mathematical Society and the Association of mathematics Teachers.
First prize, of $250, was awarded to Mr Alastair McNaughton, head of mathematics at Mangere College, Auckland. Two of the three competition judges were from Christchurch: Dr David Robinson of Canterbury University, and Mr Bruce Sutton of St Andrew’s College. The other judge was Dr Peter Lorimer of Auckland University.
