Sponsorship for classics
NZPA-Reuter London Commercial sponsorship of English classic races will begin next year when a leading insurance company supports the 1000 and 2000 Guineas events, it was announced this week. The company, General Accident, will be providing the first sponsorship of any of the five English classics. The Jockey Club, governing horse racing in
• Britain, had resisted such a move for many years but decided a year ago that commercial sponsorship of the classics was inevitable. The deal with General Accident is for three years. The 2000 Guineas was first run in 1809 and the 1000 Guineas in 1814. Next year the races will worth £90,000 $NZ210,000) and £BO,OOO ($NZ186,000) to the respective wipers.
