Last minute pull out
NZPA London The first Commonwealth amateur boxing championships took a body blow yesterday when Kenya unexpectedly withdrew from the six-day event in Belfast. Worse could follow as it is thought that Ghana and Uganda may also pull out, reducing the initial entry of 12 nations to nine.
The Kenyans had confirmed their entry last week with a team of ten boxers and six officials, but then a cable arrived from Nairobi, which simply said: “Sorrylast minute decision not travelling. Letter follows.”
It reached the Ulster Boxing Council president, Mr Eddie Thompson, at the same time as a crack Nigerian team of medal winners from last year’s Commonwealth Games in Brisbane checked into headquarters at Jordanstown polytechnic, a sprawling campus overlooking Belfast loch.
The weigh-in and draw for the championships was to have been yesterday, but it was agreed to postpone the ceremoney until today in the hope that teams from Ghana and Uganda would arrive.
However, Mr Thompson, a former international referee, said: “Knowing the political situation in both countries, I’m not all that optimistic.”
