Pilots grounded by flu
PA Auckland A bout of flu among Air New Zealand captains caused delays in domestic and international flights yesterday. The Auckland-Napier-Auckland flight was cancelled yesterday morning when a captain fell sick. Several captains are usually rostered on in reserve, but with three other pilots off sick, no-one was available to take his place. The 34 passengers travelling from Napier to Auckland were picked up by flights coming from Wellington and most of the 30odd passengers bound for Napier were rebooked on later flights. The Honolulu-to-Los Angeles section of the Air New Zealand flight from Auckland was delayed by four hours yesterday when the captain was grounded with blocked ears, a common and serious problem whoch can lead to burst ear drums. The captain flying from Los Angeles to Honolulu filled in for the sick captain and the flight will be one hour and 40 minutes late arriving in Auckland this morning.
