Police injured in hotel brawl
PA Rotorua Three policemen were injured and considerable damage caused to property after a brawl erupted at the Te Puke hotel on Thursday evening. A Tauranga police spokesman said yesterday the trouble started about 9 p.m. The three Te Puke policemen went to the hotel to try and defuse the situation.
When the move proved unsuccessful and one of the policemen became trapped in the hotel, 18 police were sent from Tauranga to assist, but the effort to calm the crowd proved fruitless and at 10.15 p.m. an all-in brawl erupted. “Bottles, jugs, glasses, tables, and barstools were hurled round the bar and the situation turned very hostile,” said the spokesman.
During the fracas, Constables R. Burgess and K. Morrissey, both of Te Puke, suffered facial injuries and Constable T. Harris, of Tauranga, was struck with a barstool. All three were given hospital treatment and later discharged.
The spokesman said as far as the police were aware the trouble was not gang-related. “It appears to be one of those situations where early troubled turned into a nasty confrontation involving several people,” he said. Three Te Puke men were charged yesterday in connection with the brawl. Two entered no pleas to charges of assault, and the other entered no plea to a charge of behaving in a disorderly manner likely to cause violence.
The three appeared in the District Court at Tauranga before Judge Wilson and were remanded to Tuesday. One was remanded in custody and the others were remanded on bail. ,
