Election promises

Sir,—l note that M. T. Moore does not dispute Mr Nash’s promises in 1957, nor do I dispute the financial situation Labour inherited when it took office. This is not the basis of my contention. The fact remains that Mr Nash toured this country before the 1957 election, telling the people he would find all the money without increasing the taxation. For Mr Nash to find that he inherited a deficit legacy from National, after he took office, is no criterion for the extravagant promises he made at random, before the 1957 election; he certainly took a gamble. The defeat of Labour in 1960 needs no speculation. — Yours, etc.,

ALLEN FRAMPTON. September 3, 1983.
