Jim Lapsley sets off
Canterbury’s top golfer for the last two years, Jim Lapsley, feels “like a V 8 motor running on six cylinders” as he prepares for the eleventh Asia-Pacific tournament at the Nam Seoul Golf Club in South Korea from September 14 to 17.
But he considers that is not far away from firing on full charge for the testing assignment facing him. Lapsley leaves Christchurch today to be united with his national team-mates, Mike Barltrop and Terry Coch-
rane (both Auckland), and the New Zealand matchplay champion, Colin Taylor, of Waikato. They depart for South Korea tomorrow. The tournament is over 72 holes of stroke play and will be played on the lines of the Eisenhower Trophy format, with the best three scores from each round counting towards the team aggregate. It will be the first time that Lapsley has represented New Zealand in competition overseas, although he made a grand debut for
the country earlier this year.
He was New Zealand’s leading player over 72 holes of stroke competition when the four-man team gained its first victory against Japan in this country.
Fitness is no problem for the wiry Cust farmer — lambing time at present has made sure that he has had ample exercise. The only worry as far as his form is concerned is his inconsistency.
