Prisoner to be released
PA Wellington A prison inmate, Maria Murphy, will be released under strict supervision when she leaves Wellington Hospital with her new-born baby, the Minister of Justice, Mr McLay, has said. While serving a six-month sentence at Arohata for illtreating a child, Murphy gave birth at Kenepuru Hospital at Porirua, but was later transferred to Welling-
ton. Mr McLay has directed that she be released under section 31A of the Penal Institutions Act, probably next week.
She will be put in a hostel under supervision near her home in Whangarei where she can be close to her family. “During that time she will be under the care of the Probation Service, and I have also directed that she
undertake whatever counselling is deemed necessary,” he said.
decision would be reviewed a month after her release.
Mr McLay said he was taking the unusual step of announcing his decision because members of the woman’s family had approached the news media on the matter and that had prompted inquiries to his office.
