C.S.B. lifts grants by $50,000

The Canterbury Savings Bank has boosted its 1983

grants to the community by s£o,ooo to a total of $350,000 this year. Welfare, cultural and educational groups in Canterbury, Marlborough and Nelson shared in this year’s allocation, said the bank’s president, Miss C. J. McGregor.

The task of allocating grants was never an easy one, said Miss McGregor, but most of the 1983 grant had gone to welfare and social services.

When times are hard greater demands were made on social services, she said.

Medical research organisations also received support in this year's allocation.

Three special regional grants head the allocation list. The Canterbury Postgraduate Medical Society

received $lO,OOOO to fund an annual visiting C.S.B. professor, the National Heart Foundation was awarded

$7OOO for vehicle replacement, and the Salvation

Army and Telethon each received $5OOO.

Organisations in Canterbury receive the lion’s share of the remaining grants with the allocation of $265,000 to the region. Marl; borough was awarded $23,000 and Nelson $35,000. Special grants went to five Canterbury groups whose projects the bank considered warranted special attention. They were the Glenelg Children’s camp, swimming pool improvements, $6000; Christchurch Clinical School of Medicine, tenth anniversary fund, $5000; Marylands Special School, $5000; Nga Hau E Wha National Marae, $5000; Society for the Intellectually Handicapped, residential day care centre, $5OOO. The traditional grant to school libraries was also awarded with $30,300 going to Canterbury schools. A function will be held to present the cheques to local recipients next Wednesday.

A detailed list of grants will be printed this week.
