Coveted rugby league award

The most coveted individual prize at the New Zealand rugby league schoolboys’ tournament at Rotorua was won by a Canterbury representative, Peter Beck. (pictured). Beck, aged 15, was the recipient of the DesmondLipscombe Trophy, which is

awarded for excellence and sportsmanship off and on the playing fields. He is only the third winner from Canterbury since the trophy was introduced in 1964. It was a memorable tournament for Beck. He captained Canterbury and Southern Zone and was

chosen in the schoolboy Kiwi side as a second-row forward. A member of the Hornby club since his rugby league debut as a seven year old, Beck is a prolific goal-kicker and very promising forward. He has close associations with horse sports, also, and has com-

peted in show jumping. His father, Bill Beck, and two uncles, Eddie Low and Dave Kerr, are race horse trainers and young Beck works as a starter’s assistant at Riccarton during school holidays and when his football conlmitments allow.
