Parking building rethink

Another look will be taken at the idea of a carparking building to relieve parking problems round Christchurch Hospital. The North Canterbury Hospital Board agreed yesterday to reconsider the idea when planning for the stage 111 redevelopment of the hospital. Mr H. A. Clark said there was not enough car-parking near the hospital and he did not believe the problem would be solved when stage 111 was finished.

Building a car-parking building on the hospital Manse site, across the road from the main hospital, was the only answer. Some did not agree with his idea. Mr C. F. Whitty said that Christchurch Hospital had 611 car-parks, proportionally more than hospitals in the other three main centres. The board also intended to demolish some unmaintained houses on the Manse site used for medical accommodation and that

would provide room for another 59 parking spaces. This would take place next June to coincide with the start of the hospital redevelopment, as the board would lose at least 150 carparks during the construction years.

Mr Whitty said there were enough car-parks at present for those visiting seriously ill patients, for handicapped people visiting for treatment, and for some hospital staff.
