M.P. sorry about decision
PA Wellington The outgoing Labour member of Parliament, Mr John Kirk, said last evening that he wanted to tell his constituents he was sorry the selection committee “did not go local” when choosing a successor for his Sydenham electorate. “I believe they should have, and I believe it is anti-South Island — and we will leave it at that,” said Mr Kirk, during the Budget debate in Parliament. His comments concerned the selection of the Labour Party president, Mr J. P. Anderton, to succeed Mr Kirk to stand for Sydenham at the General Election. Earlier, he said that some very good members of Parliament were under threat by challengers in their electorates.
He named Mr T. J. Young (Lab., Eastern Hutt), Mr B. P. McDonnell (Lab., Dunedin Central), and Mrs Mary Batchelor (Lab., Avon) as examples. He said those persons were under an “unnecessary challenge as a matter of organisation from people who should know better. They have my support in this situation,” he said.
