Man pleads guilty to taxi-driver kidnap
PA Wellington A man pleaded guilty to charges arising from a highspeed police chase and the taking of a taxi-driver hostage in Wellington in June when he appeared in the District Court at Wellington yesterday. Seven charges, including threatening to kill and using a firearm to prevent an arrest, were laid against Leslie William Kiriona, 'aged 22, an unemployed labourer. He pleaded guilty to the charges. They were kidnapping Anthony Laurance Dean, kidnapping Joseph Sanele Laulu, threatening to kill Alan James Davis and
Mr Dean, using a firearm to prevent arrest, unlawfully possessing a pistol and receiving stolen goods. He bought the pistol in a local hotel for $BO, Sergeant P. F. Darrbch said, and had previously appeared before the Court. Kiriona’s counsel, Mr Nigel Hewat, made no application on behalf of his client. Judge Jaine remanded Kiriona in custody to the High Court at Wellington for sentence on the indictible charges on September 2, and convicted and remanded him to the same date for a pre-sentence report on • the receiving charge.
