Slugging match pleases crowd

PA Timaru Danny Masterton and Eugen Emery brought the 1983 Winstone New Zealand boxing championships alive with a stirring toe-to-toe slugging match in Timaru yesterday. Masterton (Auckland) and Emery (Feilding) were both sporting bloody noses at the finish of the junior 32-34 kg contest, which Masterton won on a majority point decision.

For much of the match the two stood toe-to-toe throwing punches with both hands. Both boys received a great ovation from the crowd at the conclusion. Colin Adamson, from Canterbury, put a former New Zealand title holder, Aaron Wallbank, out of the 36-39 kg championship. There was not a great deal in the fight, but Adamson landed the cleaner blows.

All yesterday’s bouts involved juniors and intermediates in afternoon and evening sessions. Four of the first five contests were split decisions — two judges against one. The following abbreviations are used in the results to express the type of judges’ decision: Majority points decision (mpd), referee stopped mateh (rsm), unanimous
