Schools grant

PA Wellington The teaching of economic and business studies in secondary schools is to benefit from a $35,000 grant by the New Zealand South Pacific British Group, Ltd (NZSB). The grant was announced by the group’s chief executive, Mr D. N. Chalmers, in a speech prepared for delivery at the “Assembly of Business” conference at Wellington.

“After. discussions with the New Zealand Chambers of Commerce and the Department of Education, we have agreed to sponsor the production by a specialist teacher of a wide range of practical resource material to assist in the teaching of business and economic studies in secondary schools,” he said.

NZSB was extremely concerned at the growing rate of unemployment, especially as it affected school leavers.

In the depressed economy, businesses needed to be leaner and more efficient to survive. They could not afford to take on large numbers of school leavers and spent several years training them in the way a business worked, Mr Chalmers said.

“The sponsorship for the first year involves a contribution on our part of $35,000, which will go towards the production of kitsets for each of the six main areas of the School Certificate economics curriculum. “These kitsets will be distributed to the 385 secondary schools which teach economic studies,” he said.
