National boxing

Clive Bishop (Canterbury), a New Zealand representative at the Oceania Games boxing tournament, was beaten by Eldon Clifton, of Otago, on the first night of the national championships in Timaru. The highly-regarded Clifton gained a unanimous points decision over Bishop. In the junior section another Canterbury representative, Colin Adamson, beat Dale Atkins (Cent* al North Island) when the referee stopped their 36-39 kg contest. Two other New Zealand internationals, Barry Galbraith (Nelson) and Peter Warren (Southland), made winning starts. Galbraith beat David Warren (Southland) on points and Warren beat Victor Nicholson (Otago) in a bout that did not go the full distance. Results were.—
