Smart sprint by McGinty

Special correspondent Auckland McGinty promised a bold first-up showing at the Pakuranga Hunt races on Saturday when he galloped well with Ringtrue in training at Takanini yesterday. Using the inside of the No. 2 grass, which was soft, McGinty and Ringtrue rushed through the first 400 m in 23.8 s and, with McGinty just showing out in front, completed 1000 m in Imin 2s. That was the best 1000 m of the morning. Over the last 150 m or so McGinty was kept up to his work and he responded attractively. He will parade in great order for Saturday’s Admiralty Handicap at Ellerslie and, given reasonably firm

footing, could well be hard to beat.

Beechcraft, which will be taken to Wanganui on Thursday for the Guineas next Saturday, strode away from the 2000 m and increased speed from the 1000 m in Imin 4.45. For the last 800 m he returned 52s and he did the last 600 m in 38.65. Beechcraft was beaten in a 1200 m barrier trial at Pukekohe last Thursday, but not by much, and his trainer, Kevin Crampton, was well enough satisfied with him. Beechcraft looked well above the ordinary when winning so well last time out in the Ryder Stakes.

Tony Williams will be on him, as usual, at Wanganui.
