‘Cross-voting’

Sir,—l refer to the letter of August 18, from Mark D. Sadler about voting in Fiji. It should be kept in mind that the indigenous Fijians did not want independence and, in fact, sent a delegation from the Council of Chiefs to the United Nations to plead their cause. The powers that be would not permit this delegation to address the U.N. and j!hey were informed that they

had to accept independence. This was followed by many months of hard bargaining in London between Fijians, Fiji Indians and the Colonial Office and a constitution for Fiji was formed allowing for separate electoral rolls for Fijians, Indians, and Europeans. Every elector has one vote. To date this has enabled the minority indigenous Fijians and the Europeans combined to have a majority in Parliament. — Yours, etc., H. BIRT. August 18, 1983.
