P.M. regrets fare paid
PA Wellington The Prime Minister Mr Muldoon, said he regretted that the Government paid the fare to New Zealand last week for the editor-in-chief of the “Australian Financial Review,” Mr Paddy McGuiness.
The newspaper said in an editorial after the visit that New Zealand’s economic management was based on bullying and fear.
The editorial titled “New Zealand — An Economy of Fear,” said an economic reign of terror had been created.
*Mr Muldoon said that Mr McGuiness had said the same thing during his visit to New Zealand.
“The only regret I have is that we paid his fare. He came over as a guest of the Government,” he said.
Asked if he was disturbed that Australia’s leading financial daily should describe New Zealand economic management in such terms, Mr Muldoon replied:
“What disturbs me is the class of editor the leading financial daily has got. I’m appalled — extraordinary fellow.”
