Lebanese P.M. in crisis
NZPA Beirut Lebanese officials were trying to avert a Government crisis yesterday after the Prime Minister, Mr Shafik Wazzan hinted that he would resign . over Wednesday’s visit to Beirut by the Israeli Defence Minister, Mr Moshe Arens. Political sources said that Government Ministers were pressing Mr Wazzan to stay in his post.

During the visit Mr Arens held a news conference, visited Right-wing Christian leaders, and inspected an honour guard of the “Lebanese Forces" militia in Christian east Beirut. The Beirut area is under the nominal control of the Government and Mr Arens’s visit to the headquarters of a private army there was seen as a challenge to Mr Wazzan.
Mr Wazzan, aged 57, who is also Interior Minister, is the top Muslim official in the Gemayel Administration.
