The day in Parliament
PA Wellington Mr C. R. Marshall (Lab., Wanganui) made a personal statement in Parliament when it sat at 2.30 p.m. yesterday. It related to assertions made in the Budget debate on Wednesday by the Minister of Education, Mr Wellington. Ms Helen Clark (Lab., Mt Albert) presented a petition on behalf of R. J. Dexter and 305 others asking the House to reject the Transport Amendment Bill (No.
5). The Urban Transport Council report was tabled. Mrs Margaret Shields (Lab., Kapiti) gave notice of her intention to introduce the Statistics of Unemployment and Household Labour Force Survey Bill. Notice was given of 10 other motions.
The Associate Minister of Finance, Mr Falloon, introduced the Land Tax (Annual) Bill and the Land Tax Amendment Bill. Mr Falloon also introduced the Income Tax
(Annual) Bill and the Income Tax Amendment (No. 2) Bill. Ministers answered 17 questions. A local bill, the Great Barrier Island (Mining Privileges) Bill, was brought into the House by Mr R. W. Prebble (Lab., Auckland Central).
Debate on its introduction was interrupted by the 5.30 p.m. adjournment.
When the House resumed, at 7.30 p.m., the Auckland City Council (Water Rates and Charges) Empowering Bill was withdrawn. The Northland Harbour Board (Tutukaka) Vesting and Empowering Bill was given a second reading. Mr John Banks (Nat., Whangarei) continued his Budget debate address.
Mr Banks was followed by Mr E. E. Isbey (Lab., Papatoetoe), the Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot, Mr G. T. Knapp (Social Credit, East Coast Bays), Mr P. C. East (Nat., Rotorua), and Mr P. Goff (Lab., Roskill). Mr Goff was interrupted when the House rose at 10.30 p.m.
