Imports up—Labour
PA Wellington Manufacturers were obviously increasing their import orders, the Opposition’s finance spokesman, Mr Roger Douglas, said last evening. Mr Douglas made his comment after figures were released showing that payments for private imports were expected to average $452 million a month from July to September. He said that imports were up slightly on the three months ended June.
Manufacturers expected an election year upturn, and more buoyant conditions resulting from the very large deficit in Budget, he added.
Overseas Exchange Transaction statistics re-
leased recently suggested that the rapid improvement in export receipts was nearing its end “due to the elimination of large stocks of meat and wool.” “While the receipts from
the methanol and ammonia urea projects would boost exports, these would not compensate for increases in imports that were going to be - felt over the next year.”
