Witnesses sought
The Christchurch police are seeking witnesses to the accident in which two of the four occupants of a car were killed after their vehicle crashed through the side of the Heathcote River bridge and plunged into the river at 10.20 p.m. on Wednesday. The dead men were Peter John Douglas Thompson, aged 39, of 77 Barrington Street, and
Murray Robert Thomas Kinley, aged 23, of 6 Frensham Crescent.
Two men injured in the accident were still in Christchurch Hospital last evening. John Lawrence Smith, of 7 Logie Place, was seriously ill with leg and head injuries. Leslie Philip Sinclair, of 183 Shortland Street, suffered moderate chest injuries and was described as being in a “fairly comfort-
able condition.” The police said a frontseat passenger was killed instantly in the accident. Another passenger was conscious for a time but then died in the car.
Anyone who saw two cars speeding south on Opawa Road just before the accident is asked to get in touch with the fatal accident office at Christchurch Central Police Station.
