Soccer coach ordered off
The New Zealand coach, Allan Jones, was led from the field by the police as New Zealand beat Fiji, 1-0, in a wild, ill-tempered soccer international at Nandi yesterday, NZPA reports.
Both teams had a player ordered off in a match which featured illegal kicking, pushing, and occasional punching on a dusty Prince Charles Park and before a crowd of 10,000.
Jones stormed on to the field when the local referee, Mr Gopalam Kann, ordered Ricki Herbert off for dissent 27 minutes into the first half, just two minutes after New Zealand had
taken the lead with a goal by the striker, Kenny Cresswell. Play stopped for five minutes as Jones and Herbert argued with the referee. The police finally came on to the ground and led Jones off. Herbert followed. Tony Kabakoro, who scored both Fiji’s goals in its 2-0 win at Suva on Tuesday, was sent off for dangerous play early in the second half. Fiji attacked strongly in the second half. New Zealand’s defence held but play deteriorated with both teams becoming more intent on playing the man than the ball.
