United’s incentive
DAVID LEGGAT
The incentive of picking up a large share of prize money, combined with the desire to erase the memories of a disastrous sevenweek period, are perhaps all Christchurch Mogal United can hope to salvage from the 1983 Rothmans Soccer League. United will face Wellington Diamond United in the capital city on Sunday, having won two and lost four of its six matches since the resumption of league activities after the break. Its prospects of winning the league effectively ended last Sunday when it went down to Papatoetoe, despite having enough opportunities to have won the match.
Its inability to capitalise on scoring chances has cost United much this winter. Ricky Hill, whose form has generally provided a persuasive argument for bringing out more English imports, and Johann Verweij have toiled hard, but with insufficient support up front.
The midfielders have not got forward into supporting positions quickly enough while the defence has been guilty of some sloppy marking and indeed both goals it conceded last week-end could be put down to defensive inefficiencies.
United must now salvage what it can .out of the remaining five matches. If it can secure 12 of the possible 15 points, it will
still receive a useful portion of prize money. But that will scarcely wipe out the memories of a disappointing league campaign. The other five matches on Sunday are Dunedin Technical v. Manurewa, Gisborne City v. Dunedin City, Papatoetoe v. Hanimex-North Shore, Napier City Rovers v. National Mutual Miramar and McKee Nelson United v. Mount Wellington. Three catch-up games in the Hertz League will be played tomorrow. Cashmere-Wanderers will face Halswell United, Western will play Nomads United and Woolston W.M.C. will meet Christchurch United’s reserves.
