Wrightson to sponsor series again
Wrightson NMA and Wrightson Bloodstock, Ltd, will again sponsor the “Wrightson Southern Filly Award” series this season. The sponsorship will be on the same basis as last season. For the winner of the eight-race series there will be a trophy valued at $650, a $2OOO cheque and a dress rug. There will be a sash and photograph for' the winner of each race in the series and each club hosting those races will receive a cheque
for $5OO. Competitors in the series will be awarded seven points for a win, three points for second and one point for third. The first two races, both to be run over 1400 m, will be the Geraldine Racing Club’s Geraldine Challenge Stakes at Orari on October 15 and the Southland Racing Club’s Ascot Park Stakes at Invercargill on November 19. The stake for those two events will be $6OOO and $6750 respectively. ■
The Timaru Racing Club’s Show Gate Stakes, a 1600 m event worth $8250, will be run at Washdyke on December 27, then contestants will step up to 1800 m in the $6250 Princess Mellay Stakes at the Gore Racing Club’s meeting on February 1 next year. The next two races in the series will both be over 1600 m. They are the Otago Racing Club’s $5500 Otago Mannequin Stakes, at Wingatui on February 21, and the Oamaru Jockey Club’s
Waitaki Stakes, worth $6250, on March 26. The distance of the seventh race in the series, the Inglewood Stakes at the North Canterbury Racing Club’s meeting on April 16, has yet to be decided. But it will be either a 1600 or 2000 m event for a stake of $6500. The series will wind up with the Canterbury Jockey Club’s Warstep Stakes at Riccarton on April 28. This event will be run over 2000 m for a stake of $7500.
