Barley price up
Triumph malting barley for export will be worth in excess of 5200 a tonne next harvest,, according to Mr G. B. Robertson, chairman of the South Island Barley Society. The recent dry weather in Europe had affected the northern barley crops and interest in New Zealand Triumph barley from the 1984 harvest and current exchange rates indicated that a price of $2OO or better could be expected by farmers, said Mr Robertson this week.
Last year at about this time the Barley Society suggested to growers that a price of $lBO for export Triumph was likely. Sales
made this year have achieved that figure. These prices are based on March values so that growers who hold grain for shipment later in the year will receive a storage increment.
The future for malting exports from New Zealand would be dependant on growing a variety that is known and proven internationally, said Mr Robertson.
“In this respect we are very happy with the way in which New Zealand Triumph is being accepted and we are now confident that it would rank amongst the best in the world,” he said.
