Badminton struggle expected
Peter Whiting will have a tough struggle if he is to justify his top seeding and win the Skellerup Canterbury badminton championships singles title this week-end. Last year, Whiting was beaten in the men’s final by the international, Steve Wilson, and this time he will need to repulse the more than useful challenge of the Skelt brothers from Southland, Nigel and Peter, and the highly promising Aucklander, Glen Stewart. Alison Ross is predictably the top seed for the women’s singles, with the former national champion, Diane Erikson, now teaching in Oamaru, placed second. The mixed doubles should be interesting with all of the top four combinations having the potential to produce some entertaining badminton. The seedings are:— Men’s singles: P. Whiting 1, N. Skelt (Southland) 2, G. Stewart (Auckland) 3; P. Skelt (Southland) 4. Doubles: Skelt and Skelt 1, Whiting and Stewart 2, M. Lindsay (Otago) and P. Gulasekharam 3, M. Chambers and M. Reid 4. Women’s singles: A. Ross 1, D. Erikson 2, J. Clarke 3, R. Stanton 4. Doubles: Miss Ross and Miss Erikson 1, Miss Clarke and Mrs Stanton 2. Mixed doubles: Whiting and Miss Ross 1, G. Miller and Mrs Stanton 2, N. Skelt and D. Barrett 3, Stewart and T. Perry 4.
