Crossing courtesy

Sir,—ln a country where discourteous and even murderous driving seems to be normal, I had an experience yesterday which shocked and angered me. I stopped at a pedestrian crossing at Church Corner to let an elderly man with a stick cross the road. The cars coming from behind in the lane beside me kept going, though they had ample time to stop. After a couple had gone by, I opened my door in panic and waved the next car to stop, as the man was walking across. To my amazement, the stocky man in the mini ignored me and carried on, leaving the man standing wondering whether to go or not. In my 27 years in London, I have never seen that happen; though here it is the usual thing. Why the callous selfishness, and why are not driving and crossing laws hammered home to us on television? Surely it is needed here.—Yours, etc., F. LYONS. August 15, 1983.
