'Bill no fault of M.E.D.’

A record power account refund made to a Christchurch company was because of faulty equipment which made it appear that $715,262 was owed to the Municipal Electricity Department. In fact, the power was never used.

Although the refund to the Firestone Tire and Rubber Company, Ltd, was listed in M.E.D. annual accounts for the last financial year, it was discussed in private by the Christchurch City Council.

Details of the equipment

fault and the period of overcharging are not available, but the general manager of the M.E.D., Mr J. H. Donald, said yesterday that the incident was not the mistake of the M.E.D. Because the matter had been dealt with in committee, he could not take it any further in public.

Mr Donald said there should be no suggestion that anyone was “out of pocket” because of the equipment fault. The $715,262 had been charged for power that the M.E.D. had not bought in the first place, and the consumer had not used.
